PEOPLE
CRITICAL TO OUR SUCCESS

We firmly believe that a world-class company relies on an engaged and competent workforce. Our Human Resources function is therefore central to the achievement of our business plans and growth strategy. We are engaged in a wide variety of generalist HR and specialist activities, from strategic development to providing support to line management. Whatever we are involved in, our key objective is to nurture an environment that attracts, develops and retains the best talent.

We use carefully chosen selection methods to give us an objective assessment of every candidate and to give each one the opportunity to make their strengths known. Our recruitment and selection decisions are made on the basis of merit – regardless of gender, race, religion, marital status, sexual orientation, disability, age or caring responsibilities.

Our highly skilled workforce is trained by Accredited Personnel in a variety of driving/operating disciplines to internationally recognised standards. Various methods are used, including a full crane simulator and specially designed Training Vehicles. A fully qualified training team continually re-assesses driving skills to ensure high standards of operation at all times.

Our HR professionals work in partnership with the Trade Union to improve working practices and conditions for all our staff, whilst ensuring we maintain a competitive advantage within the industry.

From time to time we look to hire skilled professionals and other experienced staff for roles at all levels within the business and in a range of disciplines. Our main functions include: Container Operations; Engineering; Marine and Security; Procurement; Finance; Health and Safety; Human Resources; Systems and IT.

Every year the port employs a number of Engineering Apprentices that complete a full Advanced Modern Apprenticeship. This combines practical experience in the workplace with the opportunity to obtain an Engineering Qualification (e.g. BTEC, ONC, HNC or HND).

With a reputation as the world's leading port investor, developer and operator, we have always been able to offer some outstanding opportunities with Direct Entry Management Schemes and internal promotion plans. During every stage of an employees’ career, individuals will be given opportunities to broaden their experience and work in different areas of the business, which may include overseas assignments and postings.

As a testament to our high retention of people, The Port of Felixstowe is proud to promote our ’25 Year Club’. In 2007 the Club boasted 700 members who had worked for the port for 25 years or more. 379 were current employees (which equates to 13.5% of our total establishment).

We pride ourselves on the high calibre of our workforce and put our confidence in their talent to drive the company forward. Encouraging people to develop and perform to their full potential is taken very seriously. This is supported by regular development reviews and access to high quality training and development to ensure that individuals are a success in their chosen career within the port.
