PEOPLE
CRITICAL TO OUR SUCCESS

Many companies claim that people are their greatest asset...at HPUK we strive to make sure this is more than mere words. The values we aspire to reflect what we believe is important from a people perspective, and we recognise that it is our people that drive our success.

Our commitment to attracting, developing and retaining the best employees starts long before they join the Port. As a large local employer, we participate in a number of schools events to raise awareness of the wide range of career options. This helps students to make informed choices about their education and even spend time at the Port on a work experience placement.

There are opportunities to join the Port through a number of channels, each of which offers different development paths:

  • As a port operative, where in depth job-based training is provided by our accredited training assessors to operate our extensive range of plant and equipment;

  • As an apprentice, with the combination of practical and academic training that meets the rigorous standards of the Advanced Modern Apprenticeship scheme;

  • As an experienced professional, to work in a range of operational and business disciplines such as Engineering, Container Operations, IT, HR or Finance;

  • As a manager on our Direct Entry Management Scheme, with the opportunity to participate in a management development programme that offers assignments in different areas of the business and of the world.

At HPUK we aim to provide a career, not just a job. Proactively managing performance and development is a critical aspect of retaining our success and motivating individuals to achieve their full potential. Agreeing clear, although stretching, objectives aligned to our business targets gives people the chance to show what they can really achieve. Providing them with the right development support then ensures they have the confidence to go for it!

In an ever-changing economic and competitive landscape we need a flexible and motivated workforce, supported by driven and results-focused managers. We encourage all employees to contribute to the development of our business, through challenging existing practice, getting involved in opportunities for improvement and by sharing their views both formally and informally. Our relationship with Unite the Union remains key to delivering the sustained change required to drive our business forward.

We pride ourselves on the high calibre of our employees and continually work towards providing an environment in which our people, our communities and our business can thrive.
