- The UK economy is dependent upon international trade. A large proportion of this trade is carried in containers, and more containers go through the Port of Felixstowe than any other UK port.
- Container ships are getting larger. The largest container ships currently on order have a capacity of 18,000 TEU, and are longer and wider than anything that has gone before. The Port of Felixstowe is ahead of the game, ensuring the UK is ready for the introduction of the next generation of container ships. Berths 8&9 are the only terminal in the UK that can handle these vessels.
- Failure to provide facilities for these ships would mean that the world’s most efficient ships could not call in the UK, driving up the cost of imports and making UK exports less competitive. Hutchison Ports’ investment programme ensures that the UK does not slip behind the world’s leading economies and remains in the world’s economic fast lane.
- The Port of Felixstowe already has two rail terminals. A third is included as part of the Felixstowe South project. The new terminal will be longer than any other in the UK, capable of handling 30-wagon long trains, and will double the rail terminal capacity at the port.
- The economy’s ability to secure future growth will only be possible if the UK has the necessary infrastructure. Berths 8∓9 ensure the country has the right port capacity to enable this growth.
