Hutchison Ports (UK) Limited (HPUK), owner of the Port of Felixstowe, plans to redevelop the southern end of the Port. In February 2006, the Government gave the go-ahead for the conversion of the area previously used by P&O North Sea Ferries Limited, Landguard Terminal, and the now largely redundant Dock Basin, into a new deep-water container terminal.

The Felixstowe South Reconfiguration will increase the quay length available for container handling by close to 1,000 metres, giving a total quay length of 1,350 metres. Together with the extension of the Port’s Trinity Terminal, Felixstowe will be able to provide a total of over four kilometres of deep-water container facilities, and total capacity at the Port will increase by nearly 50%.

HPUK needs to enter into binding legal agreements for remote rail works to the rail network as far afield as Yorkshire before construction can commence on the Felixstowe South Reconfiguration. A Public Inquiry into the proposals to upgrade the Felixstowe branch line serving the Port commenced on 13th March 2007. A decision on the outcome of the Inquiry is expected in late 2007.

The Felixstowe South Reconfiguration is being proposed because:-

  • The Port of Felixstowe requires additional deep-water container capacity to service growing customer demand

  • The Port can be developed sustainably, making use of existing developed marine and landside infrastructure

  • The Port can be developed within an environmentally sensitive context

  • The Port must secure its future competitiveness
