Sustainable Growth

HPUK is committed to expansion through sustainable means, and the reconfiguration of Felixstowe South will be developed in keeping with Government policy on maximising the use of existing facilities before creating new ones.

  • The Port of Felixstowe already achieves the highest levels of utilisation of resources in the UK, and continues to invest in the latest equipment and technology to reach even greater levels of productivity

  • As primarily the re-engineering of existing operational areas within the Port, the Felixstowe South reconfiguration represents the most cost-effective way of adding major deep-water capacity in the UK

  • HPUK is committed to increasing the share of domestic containers transported on the rail. To this end, a new rail terminal, the “New North Rail Terminal”, is also proposed for the Port’s Trinity Terminal. The planning application for this new rail facility will be submitted as part of the Felixstowe South applications

  • Some 24% of all containers handled at the Port do not enter the UK’s transport system, but are transhipped from one ship to another within the Port. Of those that do move inland, it is projected that 26% will, in the future, be transported by rail

Direct employment at the terminal will develop over time with the proposed expansion of berths and operations. It is expected that, by 2015, when all four berths are operational and the terminal is fully staffed, an additional 621 direct jobs will have been created. There will also be an estimated 860 additional jobs arising from associated activity and multiplier effects elsewhere in the area.
