The Reconfiguration

Features of the project include:-

  • 1,350 metres of quay

  • Dredged to 16 metres below Chart Datum – able to accommodate the latest generation of very large container vessels

  • Approach channel of 14.5 metres below Chart Datum

  • 13 ship-to-shore gantry cranes

  • 50 rubber-tyred gantry cranes

  • Storage yard capacity of 46,800 TEUs (i.e. Twenty Foot Equivalent Units)

  • ‘New North Rail Terminal’ – on land already reclaimed at Trinity Terminal

As part of the development, enhancements are also proposed that will benefit the whole of the Landguard Peninsula. These include:-

  • The upgrade of View Point Road

  • The realignment of the Port boundary to release land to provide additional car parking and landscaping, thereby enhancing the approach to the Landguard Fort

  • Provision of a bus stop and coach parking, with a turning facility

  • A relocated Viewing Area

  • Design to allow later provision of a foot ferry

Plans for an enhanced Felixstowe-Harwich-Shotley foot ferry are being progressed through the Haven Gateway Partnership, a public-private partnership aimed at promoting the "Haven Gateway" sub-region for inward investment and economic regeneration. Extension of the new quay wall in front of Landguard Fort also offers the potential to provide additional visitor facilities.
