DEVELOPMENT

The Felixstowe South Reconfiguration, when fully developed, will increase the quay length available for container handling by close to 900 metres, giving a total quay length of 1,285 metres. Together with the Port’s Trinity Terminal, Felixstowe will be able to provide a total of over four kilometres of deep-water container facilities, and total capacity at the Port will increase by nearly 50%.

The Felixstowe South Reconfiguration project will be implemented in two phases, with Phase 1 providing 730 metres of new deep-water quay. The construction contract for the Phase 1 civil works was awarded in April 2008, and Phase 1a (the first 440 metres of quay) is scheduled for completion in late 2009 / early 2010. Completion of the balance of Phase 1 is scheduled for later in 2010

Features of the project when fully completed (phase 1 and phase 2) will include:-

  • 1,285 metres of quay dredged to 16 metres below Chart Datum - able to accommodate the latest generation of very large container vessels

  • Approach channel of 14.5 metres below Chart Datum

  • 13 ship-to-shore gantry cranes

  • 50 rubber-tyred gantry cranes

  • Storage yard capacity of 52,500 TEUs (Twenty Foot Equivalent Units)

  • ‘New North Rail Terminal’ - on land already reclaimed at Trinity Terminal
