Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) Department Services

The SHE Department at the Port of Felixstowe provides advice to customers, employees and Port Management on all aspects of safety, health and environmental legislation and SHE practice. The department undertakes regular safety inspections and environmental monitoring of cargo and provides advice on UK, European and international fire, health, safety and environmental legislation.

Routine safety inspections, safety tours, audits, risk assessments and accident investigations are managed by the SHE department. In addition, the SHE department also provides safety training for port personnel and contractors to increase safety awareness and help reduce accidents and loss.

Certificated to ISO45001 (Health and Safety Management), ISO14001 (Environmental management) and ISO5001 (Energy Management) standards, the management systems help the port in its aspirations to achieve continuous improvement across all areas.

Dangerous Goods Safety Advisors

Based in the SHE Department, the port has two qualified Dangerous Goods Safety Advisors (DGSAs) who oversee the movement of hazardous cargo through the port. This ensures that cargo is safe and handled without risk to health, and the requirements of both The Dangerous Goods in Harbour Areas Regulations 2016 and International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code are met.

All dangerous goods passing through the port must be notified to the DGSAs with prior written approval and special data required for explosive and radioactive cargoes. Notification for all hazardous cargoes being imported should be made electronically through the Destin8 Dangerous Goods Reporting System. Remain On Board dangerous goods cargoes must also be reported and may also be notified through Destin8.

Dangerous goods notifications made electronically through the Destin8 system are relayed automatically to Harwich Haven Authority and are free of charge.

THE PORT POLICE

As one of the major gateways to the UK, the Port of Felixstowe plays a key role in national security as well as upholding its duty of care to protect all employees and users of the port. We have dedicated Emergency Services teams who comply with national and international regulations including the International Ship & Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code.

The Port Police Unit is a statutory independent police force committed to the prevention, detection and investigation of crime and any suspicious activity on the port. Port Police Officers have the same status and powers as regular officers on, and within one mile, of the port boundaries. They work with other agencies and statutory organisations to provide a safe and secure environment for all port users and visitors.

EMERGENCY RESPONSE UNIT

Available to respond to incidents 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, our multi-skilled Emergency Response Team is always on call. Personnel are trained in all aspects of firefighting, emergency rescue and frontline medical and minor injury services. The Port Emergency Response Unit is affiliated with the Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service and co-operates frequently with them and the East of England Ambulance Service Trust to ensure a continued quality service for the port, and to support the seamless handover of responsibility for incidents to local emergency services if required.

In addition to dealing with emergency situations, we also proactively support the wellbeing of our employees through the work of the Occupational Heath team. They offer a comprehensive health service for both employees and other companies operating from the Port of Felixstowe.
