Ro-Ro operations at Port of Felixstowe

Ro-Ro Operations
Dooley Terminal

Ro-Ro cargo operations continue to form an integral part of the daily activities at the Port of Felixstowe.

These activities are centred on Dooley Terminal’s berths 3 & 4, which provide common-user Ro-Ro capacity with lock-free access, rapid mooring/un-mooring, 850 trailer parking slots, and secure ISPS-compliant terminal facilities – including security fencing, and a camera system for recording cargo condition through the gatehouse complex.

The terminal has been undergoing significant improvements, with an additional 168 bay trailer park and works to replace 4 Bridge with a high specification, purpose built, 3 lane, floating pontoon linkspan, which began in 2020. When completed in January 2021, the terminal will be able to accommodate the largest Ro-Ro vessels in the World.

Berth 3 has a 208 metre quay, with a minimum depth alongside of 7.3 metres. It incorporates an elevating, dual lane Ro-Ro bridge that is 43.6 metres long, 9.1 metres wide, with an end width of 17 metres and load capacity of 120 tonnes. The berth can be accessed at all states of the tides by bow- and stern-loading vessels up to 209 metres in length, with a beam of 24.4 metres.

Berth 4 provides deep-sea Ro-Ro handling facilities with a minimum depth alongside of 9.75 metres.

DFDS Seaways

Ro-Ro operations are predominantly focused on providing a high level of service and commitment to DFDS Seaways, on their three-vessel service that provides 16 sailings weekly to Rotterdam (Vlaardingen) in the Netherlands.

The three vessels currently operating on this route are Selandia Seaways and Suecia Seaways, capable of carrying 177 trailers and the Tulip Seaways, with a capacity of around 250 trailers, all with a high reefer component. From September 2020, the Gardenia Seaways, a second 4 deck/250 trailer capacity vessel will replace one of the smaller vessels to further increase capacity on this route.

Working in partnership with DFDS, the Port of Felixstowe's auto-gate system provides self-service driver bookings in and out of the terminal. There is a dedicated driver services lane and DFDS provides a manned driver services counter for driver accompanied bookings, dangerous goods and other extraordinary cargo in their office.
