Employees from the Port of Felixstowe joined fellow volunteers at neighbouring Landguard Nature Reserve to remove the posts and cordons that were erected in March to help protect the breeding area for ground-nesting birds. Port volunteers also assisted with the installation of the protective measures earlier in the year.

This year’s conservation effort saw encouraging results, with 38 eggs laid and 15 chicks hatched. While the exceptionally hot summer created challenging conditions and sadly only one fledgling survived, the project demonstrated the value of protecting these vulnerable breeding sites.

A particularly positive outcome was the support shown by visitors to the reserve. The general public largely respected the cordoned-off areas throughout the nesting season, helping to minimise disturbance and giving the birds a better chance of breeding successfully.

Landguard Nature Reserve is an important local wildlife habitat and community asset, and the Port of Felixstowe is proud to support initiatives that help protect and enhance the area’s unique biodiversity
